Annie Suttle has more than 15 years’ experience in media and communications for non-profits and companies with a focus on clean energy, energy efficiency, climate change and sustainability. Her career path began with a Letter to the Editor of the Virginian Pilot about recycling on the beach in 8th grade along with a class speech on animal cruelty. Her first license plate read “SVEARTH,” and her wedding cake topper was a husband and wife hugging a tree.

Which is to say she’s passionate about these issues and brings that passion to her clients.

Most recently Annie was Communications Director for the Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) in Virginia where she initiated their marketing and community outreach initiatives around residential and commercial energy efficiency. She continues to support LEAP’s mission as a consultant.

Other active clients include Kim Lundgren Associates (check out her podcast!), Pearl National Home Certification and the Virginia Energy Efficiency Council (VAEEC). In her consultant capacity she provides strategic counsel;  develops marketing plans; oversees messaging, branding and graphic design; writes and edits content ranging from annual reports to press releases; and implements media outreach and social media campaigns.

Previously, as Communications Director at ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability USA, she oversaw their initiatives to promote the climate, energy and sustainability actions of cities and counties and to brand ICLEI USA as the premier organization supporting those leaders. This involved a website overhaul, innovative annual reports, their first-ever e-newsletter and blog, and their presence at the international climate negotiations in Copenhagen.

Prior to ICLEI Annie worked for six years at the Sierra Club where she held various positions, including Deputy Press Secretary. There she led media efforts on issues such as clean energy, coastal protection, wild forests, endangered species and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She also worked on political campaigns in Arizona, Florida, Pennsylvania and Oregon. She earned her Master of Arts in Mass Communication at the University of Florida and her undergraduate degree at the University of the South (Sewanee). She has lived in Washington, DC, and the Bay Area in California and now resides with her husband (who develops solar power!) and two young sons.
